They both chose Costa Rica because they’ve traveled there and they saw first hand the meaning of poverty. My youngest picked a man named Ricardo who needs money to buy 3 calves. He has a small herd that he fattens and sells to support his family. My eldest chose Jose, who needs the money for agriculture. He grows coffee plants and sells them to farms as seedlings. This child loves coffee!

As a mom, I’m planting my own seeds here—hoping these lovely, smart and privileged children grow into generous, worldly and compassionate men. Be good!

I don’t know about your part of the world, but we’ve been in a long, hot, tiresome drought. Our lake is 30′ below where it should be. My lawn is dead because I chose not to dump water on it when the lake looks so 3 inches deep.

It’s been hot. And, did I mention dry?

It’s been raining slowly, softly, and perfectly for two days now. This morning I sat on the big back porch and listened and smelled that organic rain and earth smell and felt peace. Lovely, beautiful and peaceful in my body and mind. Quiet, cloudy, slow, glorious rain days like this make me feel like a child again. Right back on Williamson Street where there were no worries and no stress that seems to live in my middle these days. It feels free and dreamy. Calm.

A lovely, Good Friday indeed.

My brother always says, “Fun is fun!” Seems obvious, but sometimes, fun is MORE than fun. Last Friday I got to have one of those days. For the last few months, I’ve been serving on a committee that was planning an event that has been happening here for the last 16 years and since it involves tennis and fun, I’m all over it. The bonus part of the equation, the MORE than fun part is that it was a benefit tournament for Candlelighters which serves Any Baby Can. Specifically, the charity is about childhood cancer and serving families who are affected by this devastating disease.

If you know me, you know that I wear my heart on my sleeve and kids (my kids or yours) are dear to me. I happened to play in the Candlelighters tournament last year for the first time. It’s a great time and an interesting format. You get a “dance card” as you sign in that shows your player number and schedule. You then get to play 6 rounds of doubles (8 games each round) with a partner whose player number is matched up with yours. After 8 games, you move to your next court and your next partner recording only the number of games you won in each round. The winners have the most wins at the end.

You meet lots of people and boy, you play a lot of tennis. Sometimes you play well, and sometimes you don’t! It’s very fun and keeps most people from being too serious or too competitive, but is very high quality tennis… just ask my calf which took the full brunt of an adult male overhead shot! I’m so not complaining: a) it was a good shot and b) I’ve got an awesome bruise as a story piece!

Tennis is a contact sport!

After the 3 hours of nonstop tennis, everyone goes up to the clubhouse for food, drinks and silent auction. Competition is not left on the courts, the silent auction goodies are up for grabs! We had a wine toss ($20 for three ring tosses… and you keep the wine you lasso) and then sponsors are recognized, winners tallied and announced and they introduce a family who has received services from the Candlelighters and Any Baby Can.

This is where my heart aches… but this is where my heart gets full too.

The past two families have been Mexican American families who spoke little to no English, but who felt so grateful that they chose to stand up and speak in broken English about the difference this program made in their lives. I cry everytime. They had their children with them, and they seemed to be doing well. Candlelighters had jumped in and helped them as soon as their son was diagnosed with Leukemia. Although they had insurance, copays were too much. They needed someone to help them translate, and help take care of their other children while they were in the hospital with the sick one. They needed someone sometimes to hold their hands, or pick up kids from school or to give them a break and a night out.

I can’t imagine that situation. I can’t imagine feeling so afraid and not being able to understand the language, or costs, or being able to even think about keeping life moving for the other kids. I can’t imagine. It fills my heart to be able to help these people. I can’t take the pain and fear away, but I feel so blessed to be able to provide a way for them to get some help.

When it was all said and done, and with the help of a generous tennis club (The Courtyard) and the unwavering support of volunteers, sponsors and players we were able to turn a small event into over $20,000!

My heart is full. That was indeed a Good Friday, the big bruise is a bonus!

Spring is by far, my favorite time of year. The bluebonnets are blooming, birds are singing and life is good. Texas doesn’t get many glorious days like today weather wise. I just want to twirl around in the wildflowers and sing like I’m a Von Trapp. ”The hills are alive…” The door is wide open and the dogs are running in and out like they own the place, but I can hear the birds and smell the outside air.

You know what? I give up. I’m posting some wildflower photos so you get the idea. Then I’m outside! Enjoy!

I’m dedicating my Good Friday to my awesome mom. We lost her one year ago today. Today, I’m posting her amazing obituary written by my talented brother Jimmy Granberry. At the end, I’ve added tributes I read at her funeral from me and my sons. I miss her everyday, but am so thankful that I am reminded of her everywhere I look.

Dauris Ann Jackson Granberry “flew away to heaven” March 9, 2011. Her giggling, girlish sense of humor was present with each conscious breath. She told each attending nurse or aid how handsome or pretty and wonderful they were, for a Southern Lady is always gracious. She taught her children that even when you have been slighted it is far better “too heap coals of kindness” upon the heads of those who irritated or vexed you than to berate them, or be rude. “Besides,” she would say with an impish smile and wicked little twinkle in her eye, “ it works better!” Dauris Ann was a strong, independent woman. A wonderful photographer, a knowledgeable rancher, and a great lover of birds and wildflowers, a catcher of frogs, tolerant of snakes, and was a lover of all the outdoors. She was more at home in a sea kayak that a Cadillac, scuba gear than a cocktail dress, or a pair of jeans and a chambray work shirt holding the nasty, manure laden tail of a calf about to be branded than at a ladies luncheon. All her cows were named, in a code that she and her soul mate Bill had contrived together. They could trace the lineage of a heifer back generations just by hearing the name. Bill, having a day job, left the day to day ranching operations to her. If the phone rang during supper, and it was someone calling about an ad for young bulls for sale, Bill would say ” Hang on, let me get the expert on the phone”, and he would hand the phone to Dauris Ann.

She gave her children and grandchildren humor, a love of literature, and a strong streak of rebelliousness. She had her picture taken in front of the White House while standing on her head. It wasn’t political, it was just fun! She taught that you did things because they were right, not popular, you were polite, not because someone one earned or deserved it, but because you had to look in the mirror sooner or later, and you owed it to yourself, to treat the world, the way you wanted to be treated. If they didn’t deserve it, well, see coals of kindness above. She was a Cub Scout den-mother, and an (almost) tireless chauffer to gymnastics, little league, and football practices. Once we could drive, and turn on the stove without burning down the house she announced that she was resigning as a short-order cook, and she would fix what she and Bill wanted and if we wanted something else, we could rustle for ourselves. She ensured that we learned to cook by fixing brussel sprouts, green beans and a host of other “healthy” stuff no self-respecting teenager could stomach. Sometimes we felt a little sorry for Dad and snuck him something good!

She taught all the neighborhood kids how to ride their bicycles. She put on puppet shows, put up tents in the backyard, served gallons of Kool-aid to all the galloping hordes in the neighborhood. (Real cokes were reserved for trips to the ranch—limit two per day!) Bad grammar cost you a quarter. She did not give much of an allowance, but she and Bill paid anyone willing to work minimum wage. A lot of bicycles, air rifles, and movies were paid for by money earned working cows or cleaning fence lines or hauling, stacking, or feeding hay, building fence, shredding pastures, or any of the other numerous chores that stack up on a place.

She leaves behind to celebrate and tell her stories her loving family (edited)…

Our little bird has flown and her soul has joined the spring migration.

And from me and my sons:

Cade’s Memory:

Granny was and is a nice lady. She talked to people when they were down. She was the best picture taker and loved birds. Now that she is gone, I will always remember her.

Brady’s Memory:

I have so many memories of Granny that it would be impossible to pick one as my favorite. But one of the best was of us sitting in Granny and Papa’s living room watching the Texas A&M vs Texas game last year. We would say, “Give us a Gig’Em Granny!” And she would just put her horns up and smile and laugh. She was a joy to be around and even when she got a little lost, she was always bright and cheerful. I think that’s why I like this memory so much. It showed me that even though she wasn’t always there, she never, never forgot how to be happy and love life.

From me:

Dear Mom,

You taught me to notice birds, bugs, flowers and animals that most people never even see.

…that creativity is a gift that most people value, but few people are lucky enough to posess.

…that being goofy (marching throught the living room with your baton) is fun, especially if it embarrasses your teenager!

…that there really is a sliver lining even around the darkest clouds.

…to be kind, especially when indifference is easier.

…to hold my head high and persevere through trying times, and to pity mean people. But to NEVER stoop to their level, no matter how hard they try to bring you down.

…to respect others and value their unique contributions to this world, even if you don’t quite understand them.

…that getting dirty is way more fun than wearing a dress and being prissy.

…that rolling up your sleeves and giving something a try is a good first step.

…that enthusiasm can be better than skill sometimes.

…that people don’t necessarily remember what you wore, as much as they remember what you were.

…that being outside is the best place to be.

…to be true to myself and to be generous to others.

You even told me once that you and I were blessed with the “happy gene.” That we were lucky. We see our glasses half full most all the time. You were right mom, just like always. Thanks for everything,

Love, me.

We’ve been on a splurge of purge at our house. Sounds like an oxymoron, doesn’t it? According to Dictionary.com, splurge means “to indulge oneself in some luxury or pleasure, especially a costly one.” Most of us put purging clutter on the back burner. I am so guilty! Purging is costly. I agree with that, but mostly it’s time. That and it is really not much fun. There are lots of things that I’d rather do for sure, but WOW I feel so much better, lighter even with every box that goes to Goodwill, Salvation Army or the paper recycle bin at the Elementary school. I’ve even been taking cool little things to the office to see if anyone wants them. Sometimes it’s treasure, and sometimes it’s a donation.

It all started with a “splurge” purchase of a home sauna (ahhh, another post) that needed 24 square feet of our garage. It could perch nicely on the step at the side of the garage where we had big shelves chock full of boxes. Lots of boxes that we haven’t touched since our last move. Ha! That’s where that electric pencil sharpener was, in the big box marked “office.” Sigh. Some people adhere to the idea that if you haven’t used it in a year, you won’t miss it. Well by and large that is utterly true, but I’ve found some major gems that I’m so grateful I found. Mostly old handwritten cards and letters from my Mom. (Read about that). The vast majority has been old paperwork, photos, knick-knacks and just “stuff” I wasn’t ready to part with 7 years ago.

My attitude has “matured” in those 7 years, thankfully! I actually looked through photos (boxes and boxes from way back in life-before-digital) and threw out so many! It felt great and it was a good trip down memory lane! There were so many that were slightly out of focus, faded, boring scenery, and people I know longer know. Many were printed in doubles. Chunk! I probably halved my stock of photos to scan. Yippee!

Framed artwork that was no longer my style will hopefully adorn someone else’s wall and bring them pleasure. Some of them pulled at my heartstrings a bit as I tucked them carefully in the donation box because they represented something or someone in my past. Those little pangs were fleeting. I sincerely haven’t thought twice about the carloads that have moved on. I’m on a roll. There’s still work to be done all over our house, but I’m pretty excited about it. It’s a bit addicting. So far I’ve kept my ADD somewhat in check. I say that with another box behind my chair. (grin)

Our sauna is here and the garage space is now actually being used by real people on a daily basis. What a much more healthy way to live. Less clutter, more sweat! Sweet!

It’s a Glorious, Beautiful Friday

Do more of the things you love! Profound. In this crazy, stressful, whacked out world we live in we all need to do more of the things we love. Your world, the whole world would be a better place.

Today is a day for the things I love. I took the day off work to play in a tennis tournament, paint, write and “Carpe the hell out of this diem!” I’m already happier. I just had an “Oh my gosh, if they could see me now” moment that made me laugh. Here I am, in my wee office in the front of the house. The blinds are wide open. I’m standing here in sweat pants, no makeup, a 20 year old sweatshirt and five finger shoes. Okay, truth is that in my “moment’ I wasn’t standing at all, I was dancing. Yes, dancing in front of a 4′X4′ canvas, long paintbrush in my hand painting a color of blue that my mom said I should wear everyday. My Bose headphones were rocking some Pandora “Train” station and I was absolutely singing at the top of my lungs. I was feeling like my Great Aunt Esther, an accomplished Austin artist who saw the world in amazing color and was pretty hip, cool and talented… though I don’t think I ever heard her sing.

The happy gene fills my heart and my whole entire body today. Happiness is my gift. Yes, there are others I have been blessed with, but this is the one I am so utterly grateful for. This is the one I am compelled to share. People remember how you make them feel more than anything else about you.

Make people feel happy. May joy fill your heart, the unbridled kind. Be good.

What a busy, wild week. Everything went pretty well up until Friday afternoon…

I’m not even going to go into it. Suffice it to say that I was in a “state” by 5:15 and had to clean up a mess for an agent who had left town and not left anyone in charge of his deal. I would have to drive about an hour to get a contract for them. Considering the traffic on Friday, and factoring in the holiday weekend, I was not happy about it. I was lamenting my state to a friend on the phone when I heard myself say, “I’m so mad, I want to bump motorcycle dudes” as one flew by on the shoulder. She laughed, and yes, I was kidding! By the time I finally got on the tollway, I realized my tank was Empty, and wasn’t sure how long my car had been trying to get my attention by boldly stating “0 mile cruising range!”

It was insult to injury and since I drive a hybrid, it’s verboten to run out of gas… something about having to take it to the dealer to reset something. I got off at the first exit thinking there was a gas station on the far side of the highway. I sat through a long light. I got to the far side, and there it was, but there was no driveway from the side road to the station. ARGHHHH! I hopped the curb, drove through the vacant lot (not the first one to do it… somewhat of a dirt path) only to roll up to the pump and find them broken. WHAT????

The next closest station was a mile or two away through many stop signs and lights. With no choice I headed that way. Miracle of miracles, I made it. I got gas. I was stressed and annoyed. This was freaking ridiculous. I walked into the store for a fully leaded, fully sugared soda.

At the register, the friendly cashier asked if I’d like to donate a dollar to the Juvenile Diabetes Foundation. I just said, “NO!” As soon as I heard my own voice and inflection I felt terrible. Who just said that? Wow! So I said, “You know what? I’ve had a sh*tty day. I need to do something nice. Of course I will donate a dollar.” Man, I thought, there are worse things than this silly client issue. He laughed and said, “You know it will only get better from here.” I smiled. As I hit the door I heard, “Have a Good Friday evening!”

I got in the car, turned up the tunes and sucked down that sugar. Within two miles, I was singing along and totally back to my happy self. That tight feeling in my chest and shoulders had magically disappeared.

I was given a gift. I was given the opportunity to put it in perspective, open up, let it go and get on with it. Thank you cashier man for being the little catalyst I needed to have a Good Friday after all. That was a dollar well donated.

Be Good.

With Texas in the middle of a huge drought, it definitely brings rain, water and the value of water to mind. But even amidst this very dry summer, we have water. It comes out of our taps when we turn the knobs. It’s clear and it’s clean. We bathe, and some of us even pour thousands of gallons outside on our lawns.

In some parts of the world, there’s a perennial drought. People have to walk hours to the nearest well to fill up jugs that they carry home on their backs. We can’t even fathom what that’s like. I really believe that most of us don’t or can’t emotionally go there and really think about what that must be like, about people we don’t know in a place we’ve never been. I’m not passing judgment, I’m just saying that it’s so foreign to us that it’s very hard to imagine.

Thankfully, a very cool company has sprung from two very successful folks who have decided to do something amazing. Jeffrey Church and Michael Stone have been deemed “socialpreneurs” selling water to us, and pouring the profits into securing clean drinking water for those who don’t have it. They claim it costs about $20 to bring clean water to someone for the rest of their life.

The company is called Nika Water (which means “to give” in Zulu). It is available at Whole Foods and other retailers. And because they understand that plastic containers are “controversial” and become trash, they are also donating recycling containers to schools and contribute to Carbon Fund who help offset their carbon footprint. This company does a lot of good.

I’m proud to spread the good word for them for this “Good Friday.”

Be good.
